Newport Jazz Assembly Band
“A Brief History of Jazz”

The Newport Jazz Assembly Band program introduces students to the history and traditions of Jazz music. Prior to the pandemic, the bands had performed for over 25,000 students in schools in Rhode Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, Michigan, and Massachusetts.

This digital version of the program provides a brief history of jazz from New Orleans to contemporary jazz. It introduces students to traditional, swing, and bebop and gives an overview of several jazz composers.
