SUBJECT: Zach, Kanine, and Brian discuss how a song gets brought to the group and developed – with a focus on harmonies. Students will learn how to be a better bandmate and collaborator. Includes a performance of their song “Wonder”. The video is broken into four sections: 1) Writing Songs,  2) The Making of “Wonder”, 3) Finding the Harmonies of “Wonder”, and 4) How to Find your Harmonies.

Age/Skill-Level Recommendation: Intended for intermediate to advanced level music students, ages 14 and up. A basic understanding of music terminology, and experience writing songs is recommended.

Recommended Use: We recommend this video be used to teach students how to be better band members. This video is intended for students who are already in a band or group and who have a desire to become better collaborators. Zach, Kanine, and Brian are very upfront and honest about their process. Students who aspire and look up to musicians will find this video engaging.

  • How does the band write songs together? Name a few techniques that work and don’t work for them. 
  • Explain Zach’s salamander analogy 
  • What does Brian mean by “Preserve the inspiration as you move along the process”. 
  • Kanine mentions that it’s important for bands to “Dismantle The Machine” as it pertains to harmonies. What does she mean by this?
